“He's not Donald Trump” - Tom Brady’s business partner gives insight into Aaron Rodgers’ battle with critics
Aaron Rodgers' Netflix documentary is going to hit the platform Tuesday, Dec. 17. Ahead of the premiere, TIME Magazine caught up with Gotham Chopra, who co-founded the production company "Religion of Sports" along with Tom Brady, and sat down with the magazine for a short interview.
In the interview, Chopra delved into the polarizing figure Rodgers became. From his COVID views to the Jimmy Kimmel controversy, Rodgers has been in the news several times for speaking his mind. While Chopra said Rodges rarely regrets giving voice to what he feels is right, he is not fond of the criticism that comes along with it.
"He's sort of gotten to the point where he doesn't give a s**t anymore, and he's not going to hold back his opinions. But it's not fun to have so many critics and haters. He's not Donald Trump. He doesn't get off on that sort of stuff," Chopra told TIME.
The documentary came about somewhat serendipitously. After Rodgers had been ruled out of the 2023 season after tearing his Achilles in the New York Jets' opener, he mentioned to Tom Brady he was watching "Kobe Bryant's Muse", which was about the NBA legend's journey to recovery when he tore his Achilles in 2013.
Brady told Rodgers he knew the person who had made the film and suggested that the four-time NFL MVP should meet with him. That's how the show ended up coming to fruition.
What can you expect from the Aaron Rodgers docuseries?
The "Enigma" series looks at Rodgers' fascination with ayahuasca, which had earned him the title "Ayahuasca Enthusiast" on the "Pat McAfee Show". The documentary follows him into the forests of Costa Rica, where he could be seen in hippie attire participating in a retreat.
“Think about the reason why you’re here, the journey that you’re here, makes no sense,” Rodgers tells the other members of the retreat.
The series also delves into his controversial COVID views, although it stays clear of his feud with Kimmel where he linked the late-night show host with Jeremy Epstein. It does, however, talk about his complicated relationship with his own family and his flirting with politics in the run-up to the 2024 election.
