"He's never gonna get MVP" - Former NFL player Channing Crowder slams league over its quarterback bias

The NFL MVP award is handed out to the one player voted to be the most valuable to their teams’ success each season. It's the highest individual statistical honor each year. With just two games remaining in the 2022 NFL regular season, the MVP race is taking its final shape. Many around the NFL will have their opinions on who they believe deserves to win the award in 2022.

Former NFL player and current member of "The Pivot Podcast," Channing Crowder, recently appeared on an episode of "First Take" with Ryan Clark, another former NFL player and current NFL analyst. The 2022 NFL MVP award came up as one of the topics of conversation. Crowder had an interesting take on the award.

When asked if Minnesota Vikings superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson belongs in the conversation to win the award this year, Channing Crowder had this to say:

"Put him on the list. He's never going to get the trophy though because this is a quarterback league. You can put him on the list. There's a bunch of guys that's playing impressive football. Aaron Donald is better at his job than anybody else in the world.
"He's not going to win MVP 'cause they call it 'most valuable,' and the quarterback touches the ball 60 times a game. Justin Jefferson is going to cut it to 10 in a good game. He's not going to win the trophy, but he's a great football player, probably better at his job than anyone else."

Crowder pointed out that the MVP has become an award for quarterbacks, not necessarily the best player in the NFL. The recent history of the award suggests he's right. Out of the 21 winners since the turn of the century, 17 have been quarterbacks, including each of the last nine consecutive winners. The quarterbacks will, once again, dominate the list of favorites to potentially win the award in 2022.

While Justin Jefferson has been dominant during the 2022 NFL season, he's currently a longshot to be named the MVP. His odds currently sit at +10000, making him the fifth-favorite. Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts each have +1000 odds entering Week 17, while Joe Burrow has moved into second place with +600 odds with two games remaining.

Patrick Mahomes has established himself as a massive favorite to win the award for the 2022 season. His odds are astronomically higher than the rest of the field at -550, making it his award to lose at this point. A relatively solid performance over the final two weeks of the regular season will basically clinch it for Mahomes, as long as the oddsmakers have it right. They usually do.
