"I was way better" - When Russell Wilson threw shade at Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett
Russell Wilson is one of the NFL's most high-profile quarterbacks, but he wasn't always a QB. In fact, in high school, he did a little bit of everything. He even returned kicks, something he was pretty proud of.
He admitted he didn't do kickoff returns, but he would frequently be the deep man for punts for his team.
Wilson revealed this to Dan Patrick in 2019 while also jokingly slandering his punt returning teammate and top wideout, Tyler Lockett:
"I never did kickoff. I did everything on high school except for kickoff return and kickoff. I was pretty good punt returner back in the day. I was way better [Tyler Lockett]. Nah I'm kidding. No. Tyler's amazing. I'd fair catch it every time [if he didn't play]."
He joked that he was superior to Lockett in one aspect of the game, but quickly gave the wideout his flowers. Lockett has become one of the top wide receivers in the NFL, but he was also an excellent return man for the Seattle Seahawks for a while.
What's next for Russell Wilson?
Russell Wilson was traded from the Seahawks to the Denver Broncos for an absolute haul. He was then signed to one of the richest extensions in NFL history.
Then, he stepped foot on the field and the entire season went downhill for the Broncos. Wilson was bad all year long. He couldn't move the ball despite joining a pretty strong offense.
Had the Broncos just scored 18 or more points in each of their games, they would have made the playoffs but they couldn't do that. They averaged 16.9 points per game, the lowest in the NFL.
That resulted in the firing of first-year coach Nathaniel Hackett. This off-season, they traded for Sean Payton to become their head coach and hopefully fix Wilson.
If they can't do that, then they will have sunk an unprecedented number of assets into both Wilson and Payton and be lost and without a future.
For their sake, the Payton and Wilson duo better look reminiscent of the Wilson and Pete Carroll duo from Seattle.
