Is Kliff Kingsbury making an NFL comeback? Fired Cardinals HC in talks with Texans

Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury was fired at the conclusion of the 2022 NFL season. The Cardinals failed to meet expectations this season, missing out on the playoffs after making an appearance last year. Although an injury to quarterback Kyler Murray may have been a factor, but the Cardinals felt it was time to move on.

After reportedly taking a long vacation to Thailand, Kingsbury has returned to the United States and is seeking a new coaching job. According to NFL insider Dan Graziano, the Houston Texans have expressed interest in Kingsbury.

Per sources, former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury is in Houston today, speaking to the Texans about a job on DeMeco Ryans’ coaching staff.

While it appears unlikely that Kingsbury will receive consideration for a head coaching job immediately, the Texans are apparently interested in adding him to their staff. They recently hired former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, who is also a former linebacker for the Texans, as their head coach.

It's unclear exactly which coaching position that Kliff Kingsbury and the Texans are discussing, but it can be assumed that it's on the offensive side where he specializes. It's possible he's being interviewed to be their next offensive coordinator as they have an opening for the position.

The Texans also own the second overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft. It appears extremely likely that they will be looking to select a quarterback after Davis Mills failed to secure a long-term job as the starter. Having a solid group of offensive coaches around a rookie quarterback can help them develop their potential. Kliff Kingsbury could be one of the coaches to fill this role.

While Kliff Kingsbury may not have lived up to expectations with the Arizona Cardinals, he helped develop Kyler Murray into a top-level quarterback. Before earning a head coaching job in the NFL, he put together a proven track record of offensive success coaching college football. He served as both an offensive coordinator and head coach.

He received his first offensive coordinator job with the Houston Cougars. After helping them lead the NCAA in almost every offensive category, he accepted a job in the same position with the Texas A&M Aggies. He helped Johnny Manziel win the Heisman Trophy, while the offense led the loaded Southeastern Conference in just about every offensive statistic.

His impressive run as offensive coordinator earned him a job as the head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, his alma mater. He continued to showcase his elite offensive gameplan while coaching NFL starting quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes along the way.

After a rocky road with the Cardinals, he will look to get back to his offensive domination, seeking a new job for the 2023 season.
