Is a Tua Tagovailoa holdout in the cards? Tyreek Hill clarifies QB's plansĀ
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa knows a contract extension is on the way and isn't forcing it down their throats. While some players have held out of training camp and missed organized team activities amid a new contract, Tagovailoa doesn't plan on having the same approach.
As Miami players spoke to the media today, wide receiver Tyreek Hill gave some optimistic news about the Dolphins quarterback, per Adam Beasley
Some thought Tua would potentially hold out and not show up to team activities until he received a contract extension. It is unclear whether or not Tagovailoa will participate in activities or if he will "hold in." Holding in has become more popular in recent years. Players hoping for new contracts show up for the team-organized activities but don't partake.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is currently holding in with the Packers. He is not practicing until he gets a contract extension but is present at the team facility for training camp.
Tagovailoa is entering the fifth season of his NFL career and the final deal of his rookie season. He has a 32-19 record as a starting quarterback and has led Miami to two playoff appearances in the last two seasons.
Exploring Tua Tagovailoa's projected contract extension
The next three quarterbacks who will likely receive big contract extensions are Tua Tagovailoa, Dak Prescott, and Jordan Love. All three could likely exceed $55 million per season and break $60 million per season.
Six NFL quarterbacks are currently paid $50 million or more per season. Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow signed contract extensions of $51 million per season or more last off-season. This off-season Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence inked extensions worth over $53 million yearly. Lawrence has tied Burrow as the highest-paid QB in the league, at $55 million per season.
Tagovailoa's contract will look similar to Lawrence's and likely surpass his value. Tagovailoa has a better completion percentage and passer rating and has a winning record. Depending on who gets extended next, that contract could be a good measuring stick for Tagovailoa, if the next QB contract exceeds Lawrence's.
Regardless of the number, Tagovailoa will likely be a top-five, top-three highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.
