"It made me less naive" - Jared Goff says Rams served him reality check with blockbuster Lions trade
Jared Goff faced one of the harshest realities of the NFL being a business during his trade. The Los Angeles Rams made Goff the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. In 2019, the franchise picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, and a few months later, they signed him to a massive $134 million deal. However, by the start of the next season, Goff was traded to the Detroit Lions for Matthew Stafford.
On Tuesday, Goff appeared on the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast and recounted his feelings on the day of his trade. However, the 29-year-old highlighted that this was a coming-of-age moment for him in the NFL.
“I think it's made me less naive. I think when I was younger it was like, ‘Oh, they love me. We signed the extension, here we go; we're going to be together for 15 years.' And everyone thinks that, right, and eventually that changes.
“I think it's allowed my perspective to be much better on what it is, and the relationships are important, and it is family, and you love your guys. But at the end of the day, you do know that there are powers that be that will do what is in their minds best for the team.” (01:44:58 – 01:45:26)
Jared Goff also pointed out that his fears of moving to the Lions were alleviated once he had a chat with coach Dan Campbell.
Jared Goff wants to build on the success of last season
Last season, Jared Goff led the Lions to win their first playoff game in 30 years. They also came close to going to the Super Bowl; however, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in a nail-biting finish.
On the 'Pardon My Take' podcast, Goff highlighted that he is not content with last season's historic run and wants the Lions to reach the promised land. The team has “tasted” playoff success and will stop at nothing but the Super Bowl pointed out Goff.
