"It's a dumb label" - Mike Florio demands Brock Purdy and other 'Mr. Irrelevants' get respect
Brock Purdy led the San Francisco 49ers to a 35-7 win over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Purdy was the last draft pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but he has come to the rescue this season for the 49ers.
With both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance out for the rest of the season, it is now up to Purdy to lead the Super Bowl charge for the 49ers. Brock Purdy was labeled as "Mr. Irrelevant" because he was the last-picked player in this year's draft, but NBC's Mike Florio has a strong objection to it.
Florio doesn't want players to be labeled as irrelevant because they can become game-changers and have legendary careers. Here's what he said:
"Can we agree to retire the "Mr. Irrelevant" title for the last player taken in the draft? It's a seven-round draft. Undrafted players become starters, Pro Bowlers, Hall of Famers. It's just a dumb label to stick on a guy."
In the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brock Purdy had 16/21 completions for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown. Moreover, Purdy had a passer rating of 134, which indicates the kind of game he had against the Buccaneers.
Tom Brady was neutralized by the exceptional defense of the San Francisco 49ers as he completed just 34/55 throws for 253 yards, along with a touchdown and two interceptions.
This was a devastating loss for the Buccaneers, showing they are not Super Bowl contenders this season. They are still expected to qualify for the playoffs, but if things don't improve, the Bucs are unlikely to progress to the Divisional Round.
What next for Brock Purdy and the 49ers?
Next week, the San Francisco 49ers will be up against division rivals, the Seattle Seahawks. This game could help the 49ers to take a big step in sealing the NFC West division title.
Purdy has played well so far and would love to continue his current form. The 49ers are stacked on both ends of the field, so the job for Purdy has become a bit easier.
Star receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to be out for a couple of weeks due to an ankle sprain, but the 49ers are hopeful that he will be back in time for the playoffs.
There's optimism around the league that Jimmy Garoppolo could return if the 49ers can make a deep run into the playoffs. Until then, it is Brock Purdy's time to shine on the field.
