"It's gonna start heating up": Chiefs HOFer delivers verdict on Travis Kelce's comeback
Travis Kelce has set high standards for himself throughout the years with his performances. This year, the tight end has been unable to show the same ferocity on the gridiron. However, former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez believes the best is yet to come for Kelce.
Kelce has several records to his name at the Kansas City Chiefs, overtaking Gonzalez for several of those records. Kelce has been considered the heir to Gonzalez and has proven himself to be one of the best TEs in the league. Despite the bad run of form, Gonzalez trusts Kelce to turn things around.
In a recent interview with ‘Good Morning Football’, the 14-time Pro Bowler Gonzalez stated that he’s rooting for Kelce, no matter what. However, the Hall of Famer highlighted the issue of age and the methods Travis Kelce can use to combat it.
“You look at it this year, and what is he 35? Or whatever it is, you start, you're getting a little bit older, and your game has to change,” Gonzalez said. “I went through this. We all go through this. You play long enough, this is going to happen, just not as quick as you used to be.”
“You're not as explosive, but it doesn't mean that you can't be as effective. And I look at him right now, I got a feeling it's going to start heating up, obviously, with (Rashee) Rice going down, I think you're going to see the old Travis.”
During his appearance, the Chiefs legend highlighted that with Patrick Mahomes at QB, Kelce will thrive soon and leave the slow start behind him. Gonzalez lauded the connection between Mahomes and Kelce suggesting they’ll be back at their best.
Travis Kelce opens up on struggles at the start of the season
On Wednesday, October 2, Travis Kelce was dissecting the Chiefs’ win over the Los Angeles Chargers on his podcast ‘New Heights’. The nine-time Pro Bowler talked about his struggles in the statistics department but stated those didn’t affect him.
“[I was] struggling in terms of stats. I was still playing winning football, and that’s all that f–king matters,” Kelce said as per Page Six.
Kelce will have a chance to get better stats in their Week 5 fixture on Monday, October 7, against the New Orleans Saints. The game will take place at the Chiefs’ home stadium Arrowhead.
