"It was tragic" - Christian McCaffrey's father opens up on 49ers RB's season-ending injury

The San Francisco 49ers just can't catch a break. Just when it appeared they were on the cusp of getting healthy, another playmaker was taken off the board after Christian McCaffrey suffered what is expected to be a season-ending PCL injury.

The Niners ultimately collapsed, taking home the remnants of a 35-10 beatdown as the snow poured down at Highmark Stadium. With a 5-7 record, the Niners' playoff chances are in complete disarray.

In an appearance on Kay Adams' Up and Adams Show on Monday afternoon, McCaffrey's father opened up about the toll of the 49ers RB's injury.

Ed McCaffrey said:

"Today is a tough one. I feel like someone reached their hand in my chest and pulled out my heart. Christian got hurt yesterday, and it was devastating.
"So every game is different, every day after the game is different. And you know, when tragedy strikes you, you never really get over it. You never forget about it, but you do get through it. And that's what Christian will do, and that's what Lisa and I will do."

Exploring 49ers depth chart after Christian McCaffrey's injury

It will be a case of next man up for the Niners as they look to deal with McCaffrey's absence the rest of the way. Backup running back Jordan Mason cut an impressive figure while McCaffrey was out previously, ably filling in for the All-Pro playmaker.

They also have Isaac Guerendo, who impressed a few weeks ago. However, whichever way you cut it, the Niners have a mountain to climb to resurrect the embers of their playoff hopes.

The Bears, Rams, Dolphins, Lions and Cardinals are up next. While the Bears could be there for the taking, none of Los Angeles, Miami, Detroit or Arizona are easy matchups for the Niners to finish the season.

The Cardinals' defense has improved over the past four weeks, whereas the Lions are the pacesetters in the league. All things considered, we will likely not see Brock Purdy, Deebo Samuel or Nick Bosa play meaningful football in January.
