J.J. McCarthy sends Vikings fans defiant message as rookie QB undergoes knee surgery

Minnesota Vikings fans were greeted with a fair bit of bad news early in the day on Tuesday, August 13. Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who dazzled in the preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, suffered a knee injury over the weekend.

Further tests on the national championship winner revealed a meniscus issue. While there was some optimism that he wouldn't be out for too long, McCarthy will now undergoe knee surgery on a meniscus tear on his right knee. ESPN's Adam Schefter added that a decision will also be made on the intricacies of his surgery, whether the meniscus requires trimming or a complete repair.

At present, there's no timeline on McCarthy's return from injury. McCarthy threw for two touchdowns, finishing 11-of-17 on passing for 188 yards against the Raiders.

McCarthy issued a prompt statement after reports emerged of his knee surgery. The Vikings QB wrote on X:

"Love you Viking Nation. I'll be back in no time. Amor fati."

What Vikings QB depth looks like after J.J. McCarthy's injury

Head coach Kevin O'Connell earlier told reporters that Sam Darnold would be the Week 1 starter so not much will change on that aspect regardless of McCarthy's injury.

The Vikings currently also have Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall on their depth chart.

The only issue arises if Justin Jefferson will play under multiple quarterbacks this year, which could affect his production. However, it is unlikely that O'Connell will throw McCarthy straight in once he's back.

The only implications, then, arise from a fantasy football perspective where Jefferson has consistently ranked among the top WRs.

Breaking down Vikings' early schedule

The Vikings kick off Week 1 in New York when they take on the Giants on Sunday, September 8.

Their schedule gets a little trickier from there. They face all of the Niners, Texans, Packers and Jets before a bye week in Week 6.

Games against the Lions and the Rams will also test Sam Darnold. All things considered, the Vikings may find it pretty difficult to come out of the NFC North.
