Jason Kelce gets candid about dethroning Mariah Carey as the "Queen of Christmas"
Jason Kelce has now reached new heights, but in a field other than football. While speaking to his brother Travis on their "New Heights" podcast, he shared his excitement over his musical achievement. The retired Philadelphia Eagles center teamed up with music legend Stevie Nicks for a holiday duet cover of "Maybe This Christmas," originally sung by Ron Sexsmith.
Kelce has topped the iTunes 100 Holidays chart, surpassing the iconic song "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey.
“I've fought my whole life to be the queen of Christmas, and the fact that we're finally there is just really special," Jason Kelce said on Tuesday. "I forget what the stat was. Somebody said 'All I Want for Christmas' has been the number one Christmas song since 1994. I don't know if it's since 1994, but it's been like, for like, 20 years. It's been nonstop, like, the number one Christmas song or something like that.”
Jason Kelce and his musical venture
Kelce has been working on his music venture since 2022, collaborating with former teammates Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. Their group is known as The Philly Specials as they all played for the Eagles. They released an album in 2022 titled "A Philly Special Christmas," followed by "A Philly Special Christmas Special" which will drop on Nov. 22.
However, "Maybe This Christmas" was released on Nov. 8, where the duo of Kelce and Nicks go back and forth singing about hopes and expectations for the holiday season.
“Maybe this Christmas will mean something more / Maybe this year love will appear deeper than ever before,” Kelce and Nicks sang.
Despite the early success of the song, Kelce still fears one thing.
Jason Kelce explains the reason behind his song's rise in ranking
Kelce expressed caution over the sudden rise of the song at the beginning of the holiday season.
“So, you know, I know we, we, we caught it in early November," Kelce said on the podcast on Tuesday. "We'll see if it holds up throughout the rest of Christmas.”
He added that one of the reasons people got hooked to the song is because they released it on the “Christmas downslide.” Since not many people are listening to Christmas songs yet, it was easier to rank it. However, Kelce will take it one step at a time. He also reflected on his collaboration with Nicks and called it "incredible."
