Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers dodge fine, get education training sessions for $10,000 wager

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers almost faced consequences for an illegal bet placed for this football season. The former LSU college teammates had made a friendly $10,000 wager earlier this off-season on who would have the better rookie season.

Today, it was revealed that NFL's Jeff Miller said Nabers and Daniels each received "multiple education training sessions" on the league's gambling policy after the two called off their bet. No discipline is expected to follow.

Mark Maske, a reporter for the Washington Post laid out the details in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter).

"The NFL's Jeff Miller says Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers received "multiple education training sessions" on the league's gambling policy after Nabers said on a podcast following the NFL draft that they'd bet each other $10,000 on which would win rookie of the year honors," Maske posted on X (formerly Twitter).
"As you know, they rescinded that bet. The league addressed the matter directly with the NFL Players Association, with the two teams and with the two players to ensure that they understood the policy," the NFL's Jeff Miller says of the Jayden Daniels-Malik Nabers $10,000 wager.
"They received multiple education training sessions since that time. And... as a result of all the work that went into it, I think we're comfortable with the resolution," the NFL's Jeff Miller says of the league's handling of the Jayden Daniels-Malik Nabers bet.

Even before the two could make an official bet, Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers called off their friendly bet. Per Jordan Raanan, Nabers said since he became more educated on the league's rule regarding gambling, he and his former teammate called off the bet.

"Malik Nabers said he’s now educated on the NFL’s gambling policy. He and his former LSU teammate Jayden Daniels called off their $10K bet for rookie of the year," Raanan posted on X earlier this offseason.

Daniels double-downed on Nabers' stance, saying they were uneducated on the gambling rules in the NFL.

Daniels said via Nicki Jhabvala:

“We were uneducated on the gambling policy in the NFL. We learned about it last night, me and him had a conversation … and obviously we don’t want to get in trouble ….”

In September 2023, the NFL announced changes to their gambling policy. They implemented a rule that prohibits players from betting on league games and stats.

Perhaps Nabers and Daniels would have used their stats and win-losses as a metric to determine their old bet, which would have violated league rules.
