“Like King Viserys in House of the Dragon” – NFL journalist claims Jerry Jones has no pull left with owners bending the knee to Roger Goodell
Jerry Jones and the rest of the NFL owners recently participated in a vote to determine whether to initiate contract negotiations with Roger Goodell. The final tally of votes was 31-1 in favor of Goodell's proposal. The only one opposed to Goodell's extension was Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys. That wasn't the end of it as it appears that the vote itself became a little contentious.
Robert Kraft (New England Patriots owner) and Jones got into a heated exchange with each other. NFL journalist Jason Whitlock spoke about the situation and claimed Jerry Jones was fighting a lone war against others. Here's what he said on Fearless with Jason Whitlock:
"He voted along with the crowd to save his own rear end. They have a gun to his head. And part of that gun was Jim Irsay saying you know what, there's merit to getting rid of Dan Snyder. That was Jim Irsay cocking the gun at Dan Snyder's head on behalf of Roger Goodell. This is house of dragons, Game of Thrones. Jerry's like King Viserys in House of dragons. He's old. But his influence is waning."
Whitlock continued:
"People are you know, they're probably thinking more about Steven Jones than Jerry Jones and all the little Maverick innovations and the deals that Jerry cut for the Cowboys that were good for him."
He further elaborated, dedicated to his Game of Thrones comparison:
"All that stuff's in the rearview mirror right now. What you're looking at, and again, it's a shotgun marriage. But if I went full Game of Thrones, all these guys are bending the knee and pulling off their swords, and saying I'm with House Goodell. And, I don't like Goodell. I don't like what he's done. But I gotta say Hats off to him. He's winning this Game of Thrones."
Whether the NFL owners' meeting corresponds with any scenes or themes from Game of Thrones is very much debatable. Such comparisons probably raise more questions than answers, so it might be best to leave it at that. What's clear is that Roger Goodell certainly has the backing of the majority of the owners. It seems that despite Jerry Jones' efforts, the league commissioner will be getting a contract extension.
Jerry Jones is still backing Dan Snyder
While almost every owner in the NFL is pushing to get Dan Snyder out of the league, Jerry Jones is still not going against his long-time friend. Snyder is under pressure to sell the team as there are many allegations against him. This is similar to what Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver is experiencing. While Sarver has agreed to sell the team, Snyder is fighting off the pressure and is determined to keep hold of the Washington Commanders.
Snyder is facing accusations of creating a toxic workplace, and the investigation into this has snowballed. The Commanders owner also faces accusations of sexual harassment from two former employees. Snyder has no intention of selling the franchise and appears to be preparing to fight back against the NFL.
Snyder is reportedly digging up dirt on the other owners in order to gain some immunity and support. As to whether he will be successful is another matter, which will be revealed in time.
