Jerry Jones makes decision on potentially firing Mike McCarthy after Cowboys' humiliating 34-6 loss to Eagles
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was inevitably asked about head coach Mike McCarthy's job security after Dallas lost 34-6 to the Eagles. Ever since the playoffs loss to the Packers in the Wild Card round last season, the Cowboys have had some blowout losses, and one more was added today.
Dallas fans are being treated to a poor spectacle week after week and the clouds are darkening around Mike McCarthy. After going the entire regular season undefeated at home, they have not won a single match in Arlington under the watchful eyes of Jerry Jones. They are 3-6 and postseason qualification looks like a distant dream.
Robert Saleh and Dennis Allen have already lost their jobs in 2024 as the Jets and the Saints opted for change before the season completely slipped away. While New York is still as poor since then, having won just a single game under interim management, New Orleans had an immediate improvement with a victory over division leaders Atlanta Falcons today.
When asked if Jerry Jones is planning such a move, he said that Mike McCarthy has nothing to fear. Elaborating on it, the Cowboys owner said that he has previously fired coaches mid-season before but it has never worked out for him. However, he did not give any vote of confidence to the incumbent either.
Jerry Jones repeats same message about Mike McCarthy that he did after Lions defeat
Jerry Jones must be getting sick and tired of being asked the same questions again and again, but that is hardly the reporters' fault. The Cowboys do not look like they are solving their issues as the season goes along and they are getting blown out by other teams. Today, they faced the ignominy of the Eagles removing all their starters right at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
It was the same story in their last home game when the Detroit Lions defeated Dallas 47-9. He was asked about Mike McCarthy's future at that time too, and he had said that he was not considering it.
Now, they are without Dak Prescott, whose hamstring injury is likely to end his season, and Cooper Rush and Trey Lance were poor today. Their defense cannot find a way to stop the opposing teams, even with Micah Parsons returning to the field against the Eagles. Things might get much worse before they get better but if any Cowboys fans are thinking that they might see a change in the head coaching position, that looks likely to wait until the end of the season.
