Jets' Garrett Wilson preparing to join 'elite' WRs in pursuit of major contract
Garrett Wilson registered back-to-back 1000-yard seasons in his first two outings. However, the wide receiver is willing to go up a notch this season with Aaron Rodgers to secure a high-paying contract.
Wilson was a Round 1 pick for the New York Jets in the 2022 NFL Draft. Since joining the team, he has appeared in all its games. Wilson has gone from strength to strength. However, seeing players like Justin Jefferson, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and other WRs score big contracts, Wilson knows what to do.
Wilson clarified his intentions to the media after the first day of the Jets’ training camp.
“I see all of it,” Wilson said. “I don’t look at it as far as that can be coming for me. I look at it as I’ve got to go make that happen. I’ve got the opportunity to join an elite group of guys. That’s who gets that type of money is an elite group of guys, guys that are part of teams that win games because of them and are difference-makers every single time they are on the field.”
“I’ve got to go do it. I’m excited because if you do what you think you can do there’s a great conversation going on for it at this time. That’s not how I’m motivated, but I’m not going to sit here and act like I don’t see it.”
Wilson also stressed he feels more comfortable with Rodgers and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in their second year with the Jets.
Garrett Wilson can be like Justin Jefferson
Wilson knows that Aaron Rodgers's presence will be monumental for his season. NFL analyst Craig Carton predicted on his show, ‘The Carton Show,’ that Wilson will put up numbers like Justin Jefferson.
“As long as Aaron Rodgers is upright Garrett Wilson is going to have a monster year with over 100 catches, over 13-1400 yards, hopefully double-digit touchdowns, and he will emerge as one of the great young wide receivers in football,” he said.
“I have an expectation that Garrett Wilson is going to be talked about in the same breath that we talked about Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, those types of guys.”
Garrett Wilson will be eligible for a new deal at the end of the ‘24 season. His performance this year will be a huge factor in landing big-number contracts.
