Jets owner Woody Johnson backs Donald Trump in US presidential debate vs Kamala Harris
Jets owner Woody Johnson backed former President Donald Trump to have a stellar debate performance against Vice President Kamala Harris when the two square off on stage to make their case to the American public for who should become the next Commander-in-Chief beginning in 2025.
Appearing on FOX, the NFL executive was talking up his team's chances for the upcoming season but added that he felt that the 45th President would be well prepared too.
Woody Johnson has a professional relationship with Donald Trump going back to the latter's previous administration when he was named the US Ambassador to the UK. Unlike many of his previous colleagues, including former Vice President Mike Pence, the Jets owner looks comfortable in supporting his former boss and is backing him to do well against the challenge posed by Kamala Harris.
Woody Johnson said:
"I think Trump is going to do really very well in the debates and other things are gonna happen too that really help the former President become elected."
Woody Johnson's support for Donald Trump over Kamala Harris not unique in Jets organization
Donald Trump is a former resident of New York but in both Presidential elections that he has contested, he has never won the state. Even New Jersey, where the Jets play their home games, has never sent its electoral college votes to the 45th President. Thus, some might take that to think that Woody Johnson is out of step with those around him.
But there are supporters of Donald Trump within the playing squad, including some of the more prominent names. Sauce Gardner, who is their star on defense, came out and seemingly endorsed the former President following the assassination attempt on him.
The team's icon is Aaron Rodgers and the starting quarterback has been open in his support of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The latter has now suspended his quixotic campaign and chosen to support Donald Trump, which means that the quarterback might also be leaning in that direction.
Woody Johnson is betting on this team, with a proven defense for the last few seasons and a returning Aaron Rodgers, to at least make the playoffs following the conclusion of the 2024 regular season. But he will be hoping that the players do not follow his lead and choose an official post under a new Trump administration, which might weaken his belief about the Jets' competitive chances.
While that might seem a fanciful hypothetical, it was not too long ago that Aaron Rodgers was reported to be considering being Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Vice Presidential pick. And who could blame him, after the Jets owner himself doubled his role as an NFL owner with an ambassadorial role in the previous Donald Trump administration?
