Jets QB Zach Wilson comes clean on future with franchise following Mike White's recent success

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson and his career are at a crossroads. After an up-and-down season, and after a poor outing against the New England Patriots that saw him complete just nine passes, he was dropped.

It has now been three weeks since we have seen Wilson as the starting quarterback. Meanwhile, Mike White has stepped in and has won one game out of three. While the energy around the entire organization has shifted since Wilson's benching, the former second overall pick still thinks he is "the guy" for the future.

Wilson said via Pro Football Talk:

“Yeah, I definitely believe in myself.”

That confidence looks to have served him well. After being benched for three weeks, Wilson had a choice to make and it looks like he made the right one. Buckle down and get to work on improving himself.

On Wednesday, Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced that the former starter would be the backup quarterback for the game on Sunday against the Detroit Lions. While not the promotion he was hoping for, it is, nevertheless, a step in the right direction.

Will Zach Wilson be the Jets starting quarterback again?

When a team takes you with the second pick in the draft, they clearly have high expectations of you. While the Jets weren't exactly the best 'fit' right away for a young quarterback like Zach Wilson, that's the nature of the game.

Having shown glimpses of what he can do, more often than not, the former number two pick has been underwhelming. It's all part of the steep learning curve that the NFL offers young players.

His benching was a learning moment for the 23-year-old. It isn't always going to be smooth sailing and for him, it has been anything but. With four games to go in the Jets' regular season, they are still in with a playoff shot.

Sitting at 7-6 behind the New England Patriots, who share the same record (Patriots the seventh seed), New York can still make it to the postseason.

If the 23-year-old gets back into the starting lineup, he could potentially lead them into the playoffs in what could be a redemption story for the ages.
