Jimmy Garoppolo update: 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan not optimistic about return
On Sunday, December 3rd, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left the game vs. the Miami Dolphins as he was carted off with a foot injury.
In the first quarter, Garoppolo was sacked by Jerome Baker and Jaelan Phillips, and he landed awkwardly on his foot. The initial report following the injury was that Jimmy G had broken his foot and he'd need surgery to recover, knocking him out for the season.
Yesterday, it was reported that Garoppolo hadn't broken his foot, and instead suffered a Lisfranc injury. He doesn't need foot surgery and if rehab goes well, he could return in 7-8 weeks.
On Wednesday, December 7th, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an unoptimistic update about Garoppolo's return this season.
He said it's going to be a big recovery with an outside chance of returning for the playoffs.
Shanahan said:
"Still going to be a big recovery. There's that way outside chance (of a return) late in the playoffs but just an outside chance. Not real optimistic about it but never rule it out."
Backup quarterback Brock Purdy stepped in for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo and led the 49ers to victory over the Dolphins.
With Jimmy Garoppolo injured, the San Francisco 49ers will turn to rookie quarterback Brock Purdy
Purdy completed 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the win Sunday.
With Jimmy Garoppolo out, Purdy will get his first career start this Sunday, and it happens to be against the GOAT. Purdy will make his first career start vs. Tom Brady as the 49ers host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at 4:25 PM.
Purdy was asked about his first career start and said it's cool to go against the GOAT and pointed out how he's been playing football longer than the former's been alive.
Purdy said:
"Yeah, I think it's cool. I think it's really cool. Dude has been playing football longer than I've been alive. So yeah, to have a first start against the GOAT, it's going to be pretty cool. But just any other game, man, it's got to be efficient, do my thing and play football."
The 49ers are now without Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. For their sake, hopefully Purdy can stay healthy for the remainder of the season so they don't have to acquire another quarterback come playoff time.
