Joe Burrow reflects on fighting with "football mortality" amidst injury struggles
Joe Burrow, in his short career, has demonstrated his abilities and skills on the field. However, the quarterback has also dealt with a ton of injuries during his tenure in the NFL. As the QB recovers from his wrist injury, the worries of constant injuries and rehabs are taking a toll on his mind.
Burrow was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals as the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner has been plagued with injuries since his rookie year and has ended up missing several games due to these issues.
The Bengals have begun their mandatory minicamp before the start of the next season. After attending the training session with the entire roster, Burrow talked to the media. According to ESPN, Joe Burrow said:
“Whenever the injuries start to stack up, your football mortality kind of comes into the back of your mind."
"So that's definitely something I've thought about and something I have had to fight through.”
In his four seasons in the NFL, Joe Burrow has faced five injuries that have caused him to miss one or more games in the season. Last year the Pro Bowler injured his right wrist in November which led to him missing out on the entire season.
Joe Burrow has a recovery timeline for this season
On Tuesday, Joe Burrow gave an update on the process of recovering from his injury in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens last year. He acknowledged that it's “tough to say” in terms of percentage or assess his fitness level accurately, but stated:
“I'll be ready to go by the season. You're learning to maneuver your body in different ways.”
The Bengals begin their season with a home game against the New England Patriots on September 8. Fans will be hoping to see QB Joe Burrow healthy and 100% game-ready for this clash. However, as Burrow iterated, the risk of injury will be at the back of everyone’s mind.
