Joe Burrow set to launch Pro Volleyball team alongside Jason Derulo
Joe Burrow has had a phenomenal couple of seasons. Last season, he took the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl when fans least expected it and this season he made it all the way again to the AFC Championship game. He has established the Bengals as perennial contenders and looks set to dominate for years to come.
He is not, however, resting on his laurels and counting solely on his football career to bring him success. He, like any wise investor, is diversifying. The most recent addition to his portfolio is in the field of sports, but not football. He's collaborating with singer Jason Derulo.
They have both purchased the Omaha franchise of the PVF's REAL Pro Volleyball League. To invest in the business, the entertainer has partnered with local businessman Danny White. White is related to Joe Burrow's family, which is rumored to be how the singer met the quarterback. Jason Derulo also revealed that they met prior to the Super Bowl in Arizona, where he was scheduled to perform.
Jason Derulo also put out an Instagram post asking for fans' help in naming the franchise. The women's volleyball league is expected to launch in 2024.
How did Joe Burrow get involved in volleyball?
Joe Burrow's involvement with volleyball did not begin this year. Last year, he and his family were investors in the federation and the league. So far, the league has announced franchises for Omaha and Grand Rapids. The league's co-founder Dave Winham is friends with Joe's father, Jimmy Burrow.
Jimmy Burrow was also a two-year letter winner for Nebraska in 1974 and 1975. His sons, Dan and Jamie, also played for the Cornhuskers. That explains their relationship with the state and why the league has chosen to invest in that franchise.
The quarterback other than Joe Burrow in the equation
Joe Burrow is not the only NFL quarterback involved in this league. Trent Dilfer, former NFL quarterback and Super Bowl XXXV Champion with the Baltimore Ravens, is also one of the founding partners of the league.
His daughter, Tori, played volleyball for TCU and Louisville. To further her career, she had to move to Italy. No wonder then that her father is interested in starting a professional league for volleyball in the United States, having seen firsthand the lack of opportunities for players like his daughter.
The pair of NFL quarterbacks are coming together to bring change to the volleyball landscape in America.
