Kansas City Chiefs owner keeping "open mind" as rumors of Kansas move do rounds amid stalled $800,000,000 Arrowhead development
Reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, are looking to bring home a third-straight title this upcoming season. Although the Chiefs have had tremendous success over the last few seasons, the organization could soon find themselves playing at a different home stadium due to the stalled $800 million renovation plan.
Chiefs owner Clark Hunt recently spoke about the possibility of the Chiefs playing somewhere besides Arrowhead Stadium in the future. The team has until 2031, when their current lease expires, but he is keeping all options open.
He expressed his desire to stay at the current location. However, he added there would be discussions with representatives from Missouri as well as Kansas to decide what is best for the team in the future.
“We’re really approaching it with an open mind, something that works for the community & the team. …Our focus is finding a solution in the metropolitan area,” Clark Hunt said.
Clark Hunt said he is keeping an open mind and isn't committed to staying or moving the team at this point. Once the Kansas City Chiefs weigh all of their options, they are likely to make a decision sooner rather than later. While their lease isn't up for another six years, if a new stadium in a new location is necessary, construction will take several years to complete.
Why are the Kansas City Chiefs considering a stadium move?
Voters in Jackson County, Kansas City struck down a proposed sales tax increase earlier this year in April that would have paid for renovation costs for Arrowhead Stadium. Almost 60% of voters in Jackson County voted against the measure, which also included a new downtown ballpark for the Kansas City Royals.
The stadium was built in 1972. However, with time and weather conditions, it needs some updates to continue hosting its fans and for a championship team to play.
