Kay Adams raises big question for Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs - “Who is gonna put on a show?”
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are coming off their second Super Bowl victory in four seasons. However, the team will enter the upcoming season with questions about the wide receiver position.
On her show "Up & Adams," NFL analyst Kay Adams asked who will be the breakout wideout for the Chiefs offense in 2023. She also eluded to the absence of receivers Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster this offseason:
"Who is gonna put on a show and show up at wide receiver? Kansas City lost pieces there this offseason. JuJu, he’s out, he’s in New England. Mecole Hardman, he’s with the Jets."
"And we know Mahomes runs this thing through a guy named Travis Kelce who’s been on a world tour of epic proportions this offseason. But they’re gonna need some playmakers to emerge at wide receiver."
Smith-Schuster was one of Patrick Mahomes' favorite targets on the Kansas City Chiefs last season. He was second on the team last season in receiving yards (933) and receptions (78), with three touchdowns in 16 games.
Hardman played eight games in the 2022 season but was third on the team with four touchdowns. Overall, Hardman was a familiar target for Mahomes as he played with him in the offense for four seasons.
To Adams' point, the two-time MVP's top target is All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce led Kansas City in receptions (110), receiving yards (1,338) and touchdowns (12). The superstar tight end has led the team in receptions since the 2018 season.
Chiefs wide receiver depth chart for 2023
Kansas City's wide receiver room will look familiar to Mahomes as the team will have some returning players entering the upcoming season:
Valdes-Scantling is the top returning receiver for Mahomes as he had 42 receptions, 687 yards, and two touchdowns last season. Toney started the 2022 season with the New York Giants before the team traded him to the Chiefs. He had 171 yards and two touchdowns in seven games.
Kansas City was rumored to be in the market for Cardinals star DeAndre Hopkins and Odell Beckham Jr. before he signed with the Ravens. We'll see if Kansas makes any other moves to upgrade the position ahead of the season.
