Kyle Shanahan makes feelings known on Brock Purdy's poor QB play in bad weather narrative
Kyle Shanahan sent a clear message to those trying to push the narrative that Brock Purdy struggles in bad weather. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has played four games in the rain or snow, boasting a 52.2 completion percentage and a passer rating of 66.3, fumbling twice. During his last outing against the LA Rams, Purdy struggled under the rain, posting a quarterback rating of 45.4.
Talking with NBC Sports, Shanahan said that Purdy has never made him feel nervous under the rain and added that Matthew Stafford wasn't convincing either last week.
“I think Brock does a solid job. I think it’s hard for everyone. That last game that we played on Thursday night, that (rain) was a lot worse than we anticipated. I thought both him and Stafford both had some moments where they struggled. But overall you try and watch a guy in the rain and how much he’s struggling and you can see when it’s real bad and it’s 'alright I can’t do this stuff', but Brock never really makes me feel that way.
"There’s gonna be some stuff that’s off, just like anybody, but he’s not a guy that’s gonna be as bad, kind of how my dad felt about John (Elway) at that time.”
The 49ers face the Miami Dolphins in Week 16 of the 2024 NFL season, keen to add another win to their record to try to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Brock Purdy talks about struggles in rain
Brock Purdy also discussed his struggles, admitting that it's different for him to play under certain circumstances, and if he enters the field as he usually does, anything can happen with the football.
Purdy said that it's a learning process for him, from handling the different environments to moving the chains, staying on the field and scoring to try to extend the team's offense as much as possible.
"It's just like, all right, how can I be better and learn from games that I've played in those kind of situations or environments. So that's how I look at it and for me I can play in it," Purdy said, per Sports Illustrated.
After a 142-yard performance with one interception and zero touchdowns, Brock Purdy should bounce back against the Dolphins, who are also trying to make the postseason. The 49ers aren't close to the team that played the Super Bowl last season but are still in playoff contention.
