Lamar Jackson goes off at fan with homophobic dig following frustrating loss to Jaguars
In a since-deleted tweet, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson sounded off on a fan. This came after the Ravens failed to hold a lead and lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a painful display.
The Ravens led 19-10 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the fourth, but found themselves trailing 20-19 shortly after. Jackson and the offense went down and scored to take a seven-point lead into the two-minute warning.
Unfortunately, for Baltimore, the Jaguars scored and then got the two-point conversion to go ahead. This gave them the win as kicker Justin Tucker missed an extremely long field goal as time expired.
A fan on Twitter said that the Ravens shouldn't spend all their money on Jackson. Especially if he can't win them games and if they continuously need Tucker to save them.
The Ravens star didn't appreciate the dig and sent out a highly offensive response:
"Boy STFU y'all be cappin too much on this app mf never smelt a football field never did s*** but eat d***."
The tweet has since been deleted, likely because of the homophobic insult the quarterback used.
While the offense wasn't necessarily the reason they lost, this was not an acceptable reaction. The Ravens were unable to hold leads of nine and seven late in the fourth quarter, but they did score after blowing the first lead. Losing big leads in the fourth has become something of a trend for the Ravens this season. Perhaps this is a source of great frustration within the franchise. While that doesn't excuse Jackson's reaction, it might explain it.
It's hard to place blame on any one player, but after going for 343 total yards and a touchdown, it's hard to blame Lamar Jackson solely. He deleted the tweet and acknowledged it, saying he was frustrated after losing.
How do these losses affect Lamar Jackson's potential contract?
The Ravens have lost four games this season and they held a lead in each one. There's a reasonable argument that they could be and should be undefeated. They're not, and they're now tied with the Cincinnati Bengals atop the AFC North.
Games are often not solely won or lost by a quarterback, though the blame and credit is assigned that way most of the time.
These losses, as a result, do reflect poorly on Jackson and they may drop his contract's eventual total. But if they make the playoffs and especially if they win the division, that probably won't matter.
Lamar Jackson is set for a record pay day and the Ravens, one of the most analytical teams in the NFL. They are probably not as concerned with his win-loss record as other teams might be. We shall see if that is the case at the end of the season.
