Legendary Broncos TE warns Sean Payton to “be careful” after screaming match with Bo Nix erupts during Raiders blowout
Bo Nix, Sean Payton and every Denver Broncos fan had reason to celebrate the team's first win over the Raiders since 2019. However, Nix and Payton appeared to be doing anything but that on the sideline during the contest.
In perhaps the biggest viral clip from the showdown, Payton's rookie was seen having a heated exchange with the coach.
Speaking about the dustup on a Monday, October 7 edition of 'First Take', former legendary tight end Shannon Sharpe called for Sean Payton to tread carefully.
"Bo Nix is a grown man. He's a 24-year-old. And some men have wives. They have kids. They're not going to let you talk to them less than. So Sean, just be careful. I understand that you're a fiery coach, and you want to get your point across, but everybody's not going to be receptive to your style of coaching." he said. [1:34] First Take
Payton went on to claim that Nix had a little bit of "Ferris Bueller" about him after the contest, when asked by the local media. The reference is to the old movie 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' in which Bueller shrugs off his responsibilities and rebels against the responsibilities of being a teenager.
Sean Payton's high-stakes choice to swap out Russell Wilson for Bo Nix paying dividends
Of course, the big question heading into the 2024 season was whether the Broncos would see any return on their choice to move on from Russell Wilson at all. The Broncos agreed to pay $85 million over the 2024 and 2025 seasons to not have the quarterback around.
Instead of sticking with the veteran, or even keeping him around as a bridge quarterback, the team went with Bo Nix. He has gone on to take the team to a 3-2 record. Meanwhile, Wilson is yet to make his debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Of course, Wilson's injury may or may not have happened had he remained with Denver. That said, it also has taken Nix less time to jump over .500 than it took Wilson in his debut with Sean Payton. It took Nix five weeks to get over .500 compared to 12 weeks for Wilson.
At the time of writing, the Denver Broncos have the top wild-card spot in the AFC. Will they keep the momentum going?
