Legendary Cowboys WR throws shade at Brian Schottenheimer after becoming new HC  - "[He's been] bouncing his ass around"

Brian Schottenheimer is, after days of speculation, finally assuming the position of Dallas Cowboys head coach, with the organization expected to hold a press conference on Monday to formally and officially introduce him. But as that event approaches, a Hall of Famer who played for the team has some harsh words about him.

Speaking on his YouTube channel on Saturday, former wide receiver Michael Irvin compared the former offensive coordinator's previous stint before his ascension to a journeyman career in another sport (07:22 onwards):

"Do you understand what we did? You go and hire Brian Schottenheimer. I know he's been in the league for forever, but I also know he's been playing basketball in the NFL. He's been NBA-ing in the NFL. I call it bouncing his ass around to about 15 other teams."

Another former wide receiver who has negative thoughts on the hiring is former Cincinnati Bengal Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson. Speaking on a special edition of "Nightcap" with Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe, he called Schottenheimer a puppet for Jerry Jones given his lack of experience in playcalling, let alone being a head coach (01:53 onwards):

"Obviously Jerry wants to continue his reign. He doesn't want to relinquish that power. He wants to be in control of everything, and he hired a coach that will fall in line with just that. So again, Jerry (is) getting in the way of things, again doing things his way - the definition of insanity."

Brief overview of Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching career

When one looks at Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching career, they and Michael Irvin can “forgive” each other if they get into an argument.

The son of late Hall of Famer Marty, who played quarterback in high school and college, began his coaching career in 1997, at the tender age of 24, as an assistant with the then-St. Louis Rams. The following year, he joined his father in Kansas City but was off to the collegiate ranks after that, serving with Syracuse and USC before rejoining Marty in Washington, then San Diego.

He finally broke away for good in 2006, becoming offensive coordinator at the New York Jets. There he helped the team reach the AFC Championship Game during the first two years of Mark Sanchez’s playing career.

Schottenheimer returned to the Rams in 2012, this time as offensive coordinator.

He lasted three seasons, returned to the collegiate ranks as Georgia's OC and QB coach - the latter of which he would carry over upon joining the Indianapolis Colts in 2016.

He became a coordinator again with the Seattle Seahawks in 2018, having another three-year tenure before moving on to the Jacksonville Jaguars as passing game coordinator under Urban Meyer, who was fired before the season ended amidst multiple controversies. Doug Pederson elected not to retain him, leading to his current stint in Arlington.
