“Lies, lies and more lies” - Ex-Jets WR makes feelings known on Aaron Rodgers' 2025 offer
The New York Jets (4-10) are out of the playoffs but somehow this week has once again been about Aaron Rodgers. Between offering to take a paycut to play with the Jets next year to beefing with ESPN's Ryan Clark, the four-time NFL MVP has made sure he stays relevant.
This week, Rodgers was asked for his thoughts on what his future with the franchise looks like and how he would react if the Jets drafted a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. Rodgers responded by saying he would mentor "the hell" out of the rookie but would also play well enough to ensure the young QB wouldn't see the field. One former New York Jet did not take Rodgers' words on face value.
On FS1's Speak, Keyshawn Johnson said:
“Lies, lies, lies, lies, and more lies. He’s looking for a spot, a soft landing. Over the last month or so he’s starting to say things like ‘I can mentor a guy’ or ‘I’m starting to feel better’. He’s starting to give you that four-five, games where he plays well where you sit back and go ‘He’s playing well, he’s changed a bit’ because if it ain’t the Jets, where else is it going to be?
"If I can convince somebody at the Jets, Woody Johnson and company, to just bring me back for another year, they may fall for it especially since I’ve had a nice stretch here in the last couple of games of throwing touchdowns and no interceptions.”
Aaron Rodgers looking to take some time to figure out the 2025 plan
Just like he did before being traded to the Jets, Rodgers is seemingly looking to spend a little more time with himself before he makes any decision on his future in the league.
During an appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show" in November, Rodgers said that a lot is still up in the air:
"There's uncertainty with everybody on the staff, so I'm not naive to what the situation is," Rodgers said. "If a new GM comes in and they don't retain Brick [Jeff Ulbrich], I have to fit in those plans.
"This is my first option. I'd love to play here if I end up deciding to play, but there's got to be the want for them to want to bring me back and for me to want to play. But 'I think so' was the truth and 'I'm not 100% sure' is also the truth today."
Before the franchise brings Rodgers back, they will have to fill the vacant GM and HC spots. The Jets have already started interviewing candidates for the GM role, having recently concluded an interview with Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy.
