Lil Wayne compares Michael Penix Jr and Kirk Cousins' situation with Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers
Atlanta Falcons fans are likely still reeling from general manager Terry Fontenot's decision to draft Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick on Thursday. This was despite already having veteran Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins on a four-year, $180-million contract.
Head coach Raheem Morris defended the decision as reminiscent of the Aaron Rodgers-Jordan Love situation in Green Bay, and one person who concurs with that notion is rapper Lil Wayne. Speaking on Skip Bayless' FS1 show "Undisputed," he said:
"I had no idea what was going on. I thought it was going to go to Brock Bowers because of Georgia, but also because they got Kirk over there. You know first thing I thought about Aaron and Jordan.
"Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love were in the same type of situation. And Jordan was young, Michael is already 24."
Michael Penix Jr. is excited to work with Kirk Cousins after Falcons 2024 NFL Draft shock
The Michael Penix Jr.-Kirk Cousins situation is considered awkward at best by most people, who are wondering why the Falcons drafted another quarterback even though they already had a top-tier one on the roster.
But the soon-to-be-rookie has no qualms about it, instead viewing it as a great opportunity to learn. At his introductory press conference on Friday, he called his teammate "an amazing guy":
"I actually watched the 'Quarterback' series with him. Seeing that he's a man of faith, just like me, and he's all about family – I really enjoyed that, to get a feel of what kind of guy he is. I'm super blessed to be in the room with him and to be able to work with him and learn from him and support him as he continues on his career."
Of course, they conversed during that watching session. But while it was "a very good conversation," Penix would rather keep the exact details to himself.
Raheem Morris and Terry Fontenot were also at the press conference, and once again they defended the selection, calling it a forward-thinking move that would create a franchise player in the future.
