Mac Jones’ ‘Patriots ways’ roasted by Jaguars HC Doug Pederson
Mac Jones' time with the New England Patriots ended after the team traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason. He will be a backup to quarterback Trevor Lawrence, where he will play under coach Doug Pederson. The coach has been able to get Jones playing well in the preseason, and he couldn't help but troll New England.
Via the New York Post, Pederson said:
“Mac has played extremely well the last couple of weeks and really has bought into what we do. He’ll still revert back to his Patriot ways every now and then and we got to remind him he’s in Jacksonville."
Jones' development was a hot topic in New England. He began his career with a sterling rookie season and a playoff appearance, but things went downhill quickly. He got benched in subsequent seasons for Bailey Zappe and others.
Now, while he is unlikely to supplant the newly extended Trevor Lawrence, he is playing at a much higher level and gives the Jaguars a backup they believe in if Lawrence has injury issues again in 2024.
Doug Pederson heaps praise on Mac Jones
Doug Pederson was brought in to succeed Urban Meyer, who had a bad season with rookie Trevor Lawrence in 2021, going 3-14. Pederson seems to have done a better job with Lawrence and so far, it looks like he might have extracted Mac Jones' abilities too.
“He’s done a good job. He’s done a good job managing and running the offense, getting everybody involved. He sees the field well, throws a good ball, so he’s done a good job,” Pederson spoke about Jones via The Post.
Jones completed 38-of-52 passes for 421 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions across three preseason games. He praised the team, saying:
“We compete in every other regard, but at the end of the day, we’re on the same team. We’re all working for a common goal. And that’s every good team that I’ve been on. That’s the case, you know. But the bad ones, not so much.”
The preseason is officially over, so Jones will be relegated to the bench for the time being.
