Matthew Stafford's wife Kelly shares reasons to "root" for Josh Allen ahead of AFC title clash

Josh Allen is facing off against the Kansas City Chiefs for the fourth time in five seasons in Sunday's AFC Championship Game. And a prominent woman in the NFL is urging fellow fans to support him.

The Buffalo Bills quarterback has the very difficult task of becoming just the third person after Tom Brady and Joe Burrow to prevent Patrick Mahomes from reaching the Super Bowl. His offensive core is purportedly inferior to the one that the reigning Super Bowl champions have, although the defenses are more or less on par.

But that underdog mentality is what draws Matthew Stafford's wife, Kelly, to him. Speaking on "TIMEOUT," an offshoot of her usual podcast "The Morning After," she said (24:22 onwards):

"I like Josh Allen, feel like he is a little like Matthew. Like he might be playing through some injuries that we don't know about. He's tough, smart, adorable. He's getting married. And he's one that kind of follows the book you know, like, Matthew don't say anything to stir anything up... And he takes fault for anything and everything. So yeah I'm rooting for him."

Josh Allen praises Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs ahead of AFCCG clash

Josh Allen knows the magnitude of the game he is about to play. He has lost all his playoff matchups against Patrick Mahomes, the last one being a heartbreaker at home that was decided when Tyler Bass emulated Scott Norwood by missing a game-tying 44-yard field goal.

And as they meet again on Sunday, he had no uncertain words for his rival|(s):

"Patrick is one of the greatest ever to play the game and they're one of the greatest teams to ever be assembled... They know who we are, and we know who they are. It all comes down to who executes."

The Bills beat the Chiefs 30-21 in the regular season - one of just two losses for the otherwise-dominant defending back-to-back Super Bowl champions. Allen said in the lead up to the Divisional Round:

“It's hard to beat a team twice. We understand that. We know that. It's a team that we beat early in the season, but it's not the same team. They got some guys back on their defense and their offense, and I can't tell you enough now.”

Kickoff for the AFC Championship Game is at 6:30 PM ET on CBS.
