Matthew Stafford is ‘super-positive’ despite contract extension delays, claims Rams OC Mike LaFleur
Quarterback Matthew Stafford has been reportedly in talks with the Los Angeles Rams for a contract extension the last few months. Despite the ongoing contract negotiations, Stafford has been in attendance for OTA's (Organized Team Activities).
The quarterback hasn't commented on the contract talks; however, reporters did get some insight from Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur. On Tuesday, LaFleur was asked if anything changed in Stafford's demeanor and attitude during offseason workouts, to the OC said there wasn't.
LaFleur said that Matthew Stafford still takes the field with joy and excitement. He said that there hasn't been any change in the quarterback's attitude and no mention of contract talks:
"Matthew, when he’s at work, it’s — He loves being out on that field. You guys were watching today, you see the amount of fun this guy has. Shows that it is still a child’s game, and you just happen to make a lot of money to be able to do something that he’s been pretty good at.
"But no, when he’s in the meeting room, when he’s on the field, he’s super-positive. He’s the same Matthew that I met a year ago. Cool part for me is that’s above my pay grade in terms of what happens next with all that. I know they’re doing things the right way and we’ll go from there."
Mike LaFleur then joked that he was glad that it's not his responsibility to figure out contracts. LaFleur who is embarking on his second season as the Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator referred to Stafford as 'positive' despite what may be going on behind the scenes.
Rams HC Sean McVay said Matthew Stafford's contract talks will remain "in house"
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay prefers to keep some details about his team inside the walls of their facility. Matthew Stafford's contract extension is no different.
After the conclusion of the 2024 NFL Draft, Sean McVay was asked if Stafford intended to be a holdout when offseason workouts began and if an extension was close, he said that he wouldn't be revealing any information.
"I've had good dialogue with Matthew. We'll keep those things in house, but he's been working with our guys and we'll keep those things in house."-Sean McVay said
Stafford is currently playing on a four-year deal worth $160 million that he signed in 2022. However, the quarterback wants more guaranteed money for the remaining years after the 2024 NFL season. While Matthew Stafford is still playing at a high level, paying a 36-year-old quarterback more guaranteed money could be a tough feat for the Rams.
