Michael Penix Jr. to start season instead of Kirk Cousins? NFL analyst points out the path forward for Falcons

Michael Penix Jr.'s selection by the Falcons was one of the most talked-about picks of this year's draft. Even though the choice has faced scrutiny, NFL analyst Mike Florio establishes how this can be a positive move for the franchise.

The Atlanta Falcons signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to a massive $180 million contract for four years. He was set to be the starting QB, however, with the pick of Penix, things took a significant turn. While the rookie played the first two preseason games, it has been announced that he will be sitting out from the final game.

In his column, NFL analyst Mike Florio expressed confusion with the playing decisions, since the Falcons have already named Kirk Cousins the starter. If Cousins is indeed the starter, resting Penix doesn't make sense, unless the Falcons have revised the previous plan for the rookie QB.

In October last year, during Week 8, the then-Vikings QB Cousins suffered a torn Achilles tendon, which ended his season. As per Florio, this could be a the reason for the Falcons coaching staff to start Penix for the first few weeks.

Cousins could be given an extended break to get completely healthy. It's also a chance to test Penix's skills in a live game scenario. The Falcons will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 9 to begin the season.

Falcons HC trusts his plan for Michael Penix Jr.

While the world was scratching their heads at head coach Raheem Morris’ decision to draft Penix, he is satisfied with his call. During his appearance on "The Pivot" podcast, Morris explained the reasons behind the draft pick.

Going to get Michael Penix secured our future and secured a way for us to go whenever that future happens. And whenever that starts, based on our current climate.”

Morris also stated that Penix would learn a lot under the stewardship of a veteran like Cousins. However, Morris also highlighted on the podcast that he has no plans to start Penix this season.
