Mike McCarthy gets real as he faces hot seat in contract year with Cowboys

Mike McCarthy is in his last year with the Cowboys. While several players hogged the headlines for continuing with the team despite being towards the end of their deal, McCarthy has stayed mum till now.

The coach opened up on his dilemma of being a few months away from being out of contract as pressure to perform mounts.

The Dallas Cowboys signed McCarthy in 2020 to a 5-year deal. The expectations from America's Team’s HCs have always been sky-high, and it's no different with McCarthy. In a recent interview with The Athletic’s Jon Machota, the 60-year-old revealed his thoughts on the contract situation.

“I really don't want to speak on it,” said McCarthy. “I haven't spoken on it because there's really nothing to talk about, because it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is today. And that's really something that we all can stay in touch with, because we do have responsibilities outside of winning games, but the only thing that truly pays the bills is winning games.
“And that's where my mind is at. I can't stand up in front of a group of men and consistently, on a daily basis, demand that they focus their time and energy on winning, and then I'm up here talking about things that have nothing to do with winning. So, I guess that's how I deal with it.”

Mike McCarthy has clarified that only going all the way will secure his job at the Cowboys. In his four seasons with Dallas, he has taken the team to three playoffs. Twice, they crashed out of the Wildcard Round and once, they were eliminated in the Divisional playoffs.

Mike McCarthy relieved after CeeDee Lamb’s deal

The star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb held out for the entire offseason. However, after he signed a massive $136 million contract with the team, the Cowboys coach shared his positivity with The Athletic.

“I was excited," McCarthy said, "But I think, just like anything, you're being updated frequently on where things stand. I was anticipating a sooner or later type situation today. It was good to get this done. I think we're all relieved.”

Mike McCarthy will begin the biggest test of his Cowboys career on the road. His team will take on the Cleveland Browns on September 8.
