Mike McCarthy makes feelings clear on Cowboys legend Troy Aikman's scathing criticism of WRs

Mike McCarthy and his Dallas Cowboys may be on a bye week but they still managed to make headlines. Former Cowboys quarterback and three-time Super Bowl winner, Troy Aikman recently had some heavy criticism for the Dallas Cowboys' wide receiver room.

Jon Machota of The Athletic reported Mike McCarthy's thoughts on Aikman's criticism:

"They don't carry any weight with me, because I watch all the tape, I get to go to the meetings, I'm at practice, I'm part of the games. So I have a clear understanding of what and where. Troy's statement in particular, I don't agree with the word selection. There is definitely need for improvement in every position, not just one position that he commented on."

Mike McCarthy isn't letting Troy Aikman's comments about his team affect how he and his team will go about their preparations moving forward. However, it certainly was a talking point around the league.

What did Troy Aikman say about CeeDee Lamb and the Cowboys' wide receivers?

On Thursday, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman was a guest on 96.7 The Ticket radio show. During his appearance, he spoke about the Cowboys' wide receivers and was disappointed with what he has seen in 2024.

He specifically mentioned CeeDee Lamb and said the wide receiver needs to 'improve in his route running.' He felt the wide receivers were 'lazy' in the way they didn't commit to their routes:

"I think the routes are terrible. I think they run terrible routes. And I've thought that beyond this year. I think CeeDee (Lamb) has got to improve in his route running. As a quarterback, if you're not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it's hard to play the position.
"That's what I see. I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run, usually if they do, it's because they're anticipating they're going to get the football on that play, but if they're not, they don't. And it all ties together. I'm not impressed with that part of it."

Aikman said that from the quarterback's point of view, it must be very difficult to throw the ball when there's uncertainty surrounding the receiver's routes. Which in turn puts more pressure on Dak Prescott to make plays happen.

Aikman also said that he doesn't feel Dallas is capable of competing against teams like the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens and New Orleans Saints, which doesn't bode well for them in the NFC playoff picture.
