"My dad took it a little far" - Patrick Mahomes forced to clear air on Bears draft rumors
According to Patrick Mahomes' father, the star quarterback could have ended up with the Chicago Bears instead of the Kansas City Chiefs. A promising candidate out of college, Mahomes had a bright future ahead of him.
His performances with the Chiefs have made him one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but he might never have ended up on Andy Reid's offense, according to Mahomes Sr.
While on Parkins & Spiegel on 670 the Score, Mahomes Sr. spoke about the NFL draft and how the Bears wanted to select Mahomes at No. 3.
Mahomes Sr. said:
"They told him they were going to draft him, so we thought he was going to be the third pick overall and go to Chicago. He had a great meeting when he (was) there and liked all the guys that were doing stuff there. He thought he was going to be a Bear."
Mahomes had to go back and correct his father, admitting that he took it a little far.
"My dad took it a little far," Mahomes said. "So it wasn't that I thought the Bears were gonna draft me, but I was told that if they drafted a quarterback that I would be the quarterback that they drafted."
Did the Bears select a QB instead of Patrick Mahomes?
Instead of the 27-year-old, the Bears drafted Mitch Trubisky as the No. 2 pick. Trubisky stayed with them for four seasons before moving on to the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mahomes, as we know, is still with the Chiefs. He further clarified that the information he received wasn't even directly from the Bears' camp. However, he was surprised they drafted Trubisky in the end.
"It did surprise me a little bit, but they told me they weren't drafting a quarterback. So that was the most surprising thing at all."
Mahomes, on his end, was drafted with the No. 10 pick and has led the team to three Super Bowl appearances, winning two of them.
Determined to continue on his path to greatness, Patrick Mahomes is already back at the lab right after their recent win against the Philadelphia Eagles.
