Myles Garrett rips Browns fans cheering Deshaun Watson's Achilles injury - "We should be ashamed of ourselves"
The Cleveland Browns suffered a "double whammy" on Sunday. They lost 21-14 at home to the divisional rivals Cincinnati Bengals, and starting quarterback Deshaun Watson tore his Achilles tendon in the game.
As he lay hurt on the field, the fans at Huntington Bank Field booed/sarcastically cheered a situation that star defensive end Myles Garrett did not like. Speaking to reporters after the game, he said:
"We don't boo guys that are injured on the field, especially when the cart comes out. We should be ashamed of ourselves as Browns and as fans to boo anyone and their downfall. Could be season-altering, career-altering injury. Man is not perfect. He doesn't need to be. None of us expect to be perfect."
Browns backup QB Jameis Winston also chastises team's fans for celebrating Deshaun Watson's injury
Garrett was not the only person unhappy with the incident, however. Backup QB Jameis Winston also shared his thoughts on the matter.
“I am very upset with the reaction,” Winston said. “Regardless of your perception, regardless of what you thought should happen with him, he committed every single day that I’ve been here to be the best that he can be for this team.
“I do not want the treatment that Deshaun Watson has received from these passionate fans. I know you love this game. But Deshaun was treated badly, and now he has to overcome another obstacle.”
Deshaun Watson was not the only player to be injured in Browns vs. Bengals game
Watson was not the only player to be hurt in Sunday's intrastate showdown.
The Bengals suffered some blows, particularly to a pair of starters: left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. (knee) and safety Geno Stone (leg/shin). Both of them, however, managed to avoid serious injury, with the former giving a thumbs-up and later being seen returning to the team's locker room unassisted.
Head coach Zac Taylor later said:
“We’ll get more information on that. But I’d certainly say it’s more towards the positive side that he was able to be out there.
As for the latter, the injury occurred when he inadvertently collided with Vonn Bell late in the game. He had to be carted off the field with an air cast over the affected part.
Taylor said:
"It's not, certainly not as bad as I initially thought it was going to, so there's positive there. But we'll wait and get more information tomorrow."
As for Stone, he said that if it were up to him, he would not sit out next week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
