NFL analyst addresses possibility of Russell Wilson contract extension before Week 1 against Falcons

Russell Wilson is no stranger to contract negotiations; however, with him seemingly locked into the starting role despite his calf injury, it is clear the Pittsburgh Steelers have some level of trust in him. The question is how far the trust goes. If they trust him enough, that could catapult an extension discussion.

That said, speaking on the August 8 edition of "Pro Football Talk," NFL analyst Mike Florio claimed he would be "stunned" if an extension were to take place.

Mike Florio: [00:18:22] "Will Russell Wilson get an extension before the season starts? I would be stunned if [an extension] happens. ... I wouldn't give any of [the quarterbacks] an extension. If I was any of them, I wouldn't want an extension. .... I want to have a big season and I want to go hit the market," he said.[00:18:56][34.0] Pro Football Talk.

He explained that even if the Steelers wished to commit to Wilson for longer than 2024, the quarterback should take his chances on the open market. Of course, if Wilson were to get another well-paid extension, it would add money on top of what he is currently earning from the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos are still set to pay Wilson roughly $80 million by the end of the 2025 season. The Steelers, meanwhile, are paying Wilson nearly the league minimum to lead the team this season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers look much different in 2024 than they did in 2023. With the quarterback competition taking place in training camp, many fans want to see how both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson compare. However, those fans will be disappointed to learn that Wilson won't play in today's game.

According to comments made at a press conference on Wednesday via The Sporting News, Wilson and more than a half-dozen other players won't see action in the game. TJ Watt and Cam Heyward also won't play in the game.

However, there was no mention of Justin Fields not suiting up. As such, Pittsburgh Steelers fans will get a close look at one key quarterback, at least. The Steelers face the Texans at 7 p.m. EDT on August 9.
