NFL analyst claims Jared Goff's mega-deal creates hurdles in contract talks for Tua Tagovailoa, Jordan Love

After a great 2023 season, Jared Goff was rewarded with a new contract by the Detroit Lions. The quarterback was entering the final years of his previous deal, signed while he was still a member of the Los Angeles Rams, but his excellent performances deserved a raise.

Goff's $53 million average per year is one of the highest of any quarterbacks in the league, surpassing quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert. It only goes to show how the quarterback's market has ballooned over the past five years, and it makes deals for other quarterbacks such as Tua Tagovailoa and Jordan Love more complicated, according to Pro Football Talk's analyst Mike Florio:

"I think it's gonna be a challenge to get him (Jordan Love) to Jared Goff level, but I thought it would be a challenge to get Jared Goff to Jared Goff level. I didn't think the Lions were getting $53 million a year in new money. That changed everything. I think the Goff contract makes Tua want more, makes Matthew Stafford want more, and makes Jordan Love want more.
"I think that Love's camp is confident they will get a deal done, but it's easy to say yes or no. Does the guy need a new deal? Yes. The harder part is, how much are we going to pay? What's the structure? Tua definitely deserves a new deal. How are we going to figure out the right number? But when the Lions give Goff 53 [million], it makes it easier for you other quarterbacks to say 'I kind of like that number'."

The quarterback extended his deal with the Detroit Lions for four years and $212 million in total money; his $53 million on average per year is only below Joe Burrow, who has $55 million on average.

The deal included $170 million in guaranteed money and a $73 million signing bonus, the largest in the history of the league. It also includes a no-trade clause and ties him to the franchise until 2028, when he's going to turn 34.
