NFL analyst claims Jerry Jones’ standoff against CeeDee Lamb is “same stuff” as negotiation with Emmitt Smith 30 years ago
Both CeeDee Lamb and Emmitt Smith have now experienced what it is like to try to wring extra money out of Jerry Jones. This year, Lamb and Jones have been embroiled in a game of chicken with tens of millions per season at stake. However, Jones has been in this position many times throughout his career.
Noting this fact, NFL analyst Kyle Brandt claimed that Emmitt Smith saw the same cold shoulder from Jones when it was time for his new deal. Speaking on Monday's edition of "Pro Football Talk," Brandt called CeeDee Lamb's tussle with Jones the "same stuff" that Smith dealt with back when AOL was synonymous with the internet.
Kyle Brandt [00:00:00] "What is different about this Cowboys team? We're doing the CeeDee thing now. Last year, I remember it was Zack Martin. It was Zeke before that. I remember being in eighth grade [and] it was Emmitt Smith. The same stuff."
With under a month left until the start of the Cowboys' regular season, both Lamb and Dak Prescott remain unsigned after the 2024 season. As such, the pressure is on Jerry Jones and the team to engage in conversations or risk damaging the team's long-term form factor. Some may even argue that the 2024 season could be massively affected with no deals.
If the CeeDee Lamb holdout continues into the season and Dak Prescott decides this will be his last year in Dallas, the Cowboys may wish to turn the page this season. This could mean an early Russell Wilson-esque swap at quarterback to jumpstart their new quarterback search.
CeeDee Lamb laughs at Jerry Jones' negotiation update
It isn't often that players working on negotiations will act up on social media or even go out of their way to address ongoing negotiations. However, Cowboys star receiver CeeDee Lamb did just that on Thursday. Taking to Twitter/X, Lamb quote posted a statement made by Jones that he didn't have "any urgency" with negotiations.
"LOL," Lamb wrote on Twitter/X.
It was only three letters, but the statement told volumes about how far apart the two sides are. With less than a month to go before the start of the regular season, any longer wait raises the risk of rust. If Lamb doesn't get at least a few weeks to warm up for the year, he could be knocking off the rust at the team's expense in the regular season.
Will CeeDee Lamb pull a Le'Veon Bell and hold out into the regular season?
