NFL analyst claims Trey Lance “never” wanted to join Kyle Shanahan

The Trey Lance-Kyle Shanahan experiment never worked out. However, it didn't stop the 49ers from getting back to the Super Bowl. Most fans assume that Lance would have been thrilled to be part of a team in a Super Bowl window.

Not so fast, according to Mike Florio's take on an August 26 edition of Pro Football Talk.

Speaking on the program, Florio claimed Lance never would have chosen the 49ers based on his development.

Mike Florio (1:31): "He never would have signed with the 49ers. He never would have chosen San Francisco, not at his stage of development," he said.

In other words, Florio appeared to indicate that the pressure surrounding the team would have been too much for the FCS prospect. Also, Florio's take indicates that Lance would have been honest with himself enough to decline to join a team with Super Bowl expectations.

Florio also took the time to summarize why Lance did end up with the 49ers, aside from the NFL Draft forcing him to join the team.

"We know the story. The 49ers felt like they needed a quarterback that could maybe make off-schedule plays, and they still had Jimmy Garoppolo under contract, and they freaked out, and they traded up, and they gave up a lot, and they got Trey Lance, and it didn't work," he added.

In the third to last preseason game of the year, the Cowboys took on the Los Angeles Chargers. Heading into the game, it was Trey Lance's opportunity to prove that he had grown under Mike McCarthy in the year since joining the team.

However, if anything, one could argue that Trey Lance took a step back. He threw for five interceptions in the contest, losing 26-19.

As a final kicker, the quarterback was facing backups in the contest. At times, he was able to move the ball effectively with his legs. However, using his arm had the opposite effect, especially in the red zone.

As such, the quarterback's future with the team might be in trouble. If the preseason performance had any shot of getting Lance a promotion into the top backup role behind Dak Prescott, it is safe to say those hopes likely have been dashed.

Will Jerry Jones continue to pay up to participate in the experiment with the quarterback, or start fresh with a new development prospect?
