NFL analyst compares Caleb Williams’ “fire” preseason throw to Joe Montana’s famous “the catch”
Caleb Williams was hyped by fans, analysts and pundits for months leading up to the preseason. Over the weekend, Williams finally took the field, and so far has arguably lived up to the hype. One NFL analyst ranked one of his plays in line with one of the most famous plays of all time: Joe Montana's "The Catch."
Speaking on Monday's edition of "Pro Football Talk," NFL analyst Kyle Brandt recalled spending time with his son over the weekend. The two watched clips of some of the best throws of all time. Brandt claimed that his son liked Williams' throw in the preseason the best.
Kyle Brandt: "[00:00:34] Most impressive, 1981 NFC title game son. That's Joe Montana. He's waiting over Too-Tall Jones to Dwight Clark in the back ... known as the catch. ... Preseason 2024. That's Caleb Williams breaking the pocket throwing a laser to Cole Kmet down the sideline. He goes, 'Wow. Those first two were okay. But the third one was fire dad.' And you're right, son. It was," he said. [00:01:06][31.7] GMFB
The play in question saw Williams' roll out to his right. While running, he turned and threw a pass to the tight end, who had been running parallel with him. Tight end Cole Kmet caught the pass for a big gain. In the end, Williams finished his day by completing four of seven passes for 95 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Caleb Williams on deck for home debut in Week 2 showdown against Joe Burrow's Bengals
In Week 1, Williams played his first snaps on the road. Chicago Bears fans unable to travel had to resort to watching his performance via the internet or airwaves. However, in Week 2 of the preseason, Williams appears to be on deck for his first home appearance in front of his new city.
The Bears face the Bengals in Week 2, pitting Joe Burrow against Williams. Most Week 2 preseason games featuring starters give their players roughly a full half of action. As such, fans should be treated to a nearly two-hour look at Williams against one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in the AFC.
If nothing else, the showdown could be the closest look at how Caleb Williams stacks up for weeks. Some teams elect to allow their starters to rest in Week 3 to allow more time for the backups to play to iron out the remaining questions on the roster. As such, this could be the best look at Williams ahead of the regular season.
Will the rookie quarterback continue to live up to the hype?
