NFL analyst gives mind-bending update on Brian Flores’ lawsuit against Tyreek Hill’s Dolphins
Once upon a time, Tyreek Hill's Miami Dolphins didn't have Mike McDaniel. Instead, they had head coach Brian Flores. They no longer have Flores, but they do still have a lawsuit from him. However, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, not much has changed with it since it was filed in 2022.
Mike Florio: "[00:00:01] It's an illustration of how slowly civil litigation can move through the court system. He filed on Feb. 1 of 2022. Here we are July 23 of 2024, and the case is still stuck at square one. What claims are going to be arbitrated? What claims aren't going to be arbitrated?"
Flores filed claims against several teams in protest of their decision not to employ him, including the Miami Dolphins. Some cases will be handled in litigation in a court of law. Others will be handled in arbitration, separately from the court system.
The Miami Dolphins will face their suit in an arbitration court as a result of a clause in a contract previously signed with Flores. Florio explained why the former head coach is not expected to get a "fair shake" in arbitration.
"The only team that got out of [questions about arbitration] was the Dolphins, because there was an arbitration clause in his agreement forcing him into the secret rig kangaroo court, where good luck getting a fair shake. And even if you win, you're not going to win nearly as much as you would have won in the actual court system [00:01:32]," he said. [90.9] PFT
Brian Flores maintains career with NFL despite lawsuit
After suing one's own organization, not many expected Brian Flores to maintain ties to the league. However, the former head coach has maintained ties with professional football in the world's premier league.
After suing several teams publicly in early 2022, Flores managed to land with the Pittsburgh Steelers for that same season in the fall of 2022 thanks to Mike Tomlin. With the Steelers, Flores worked as a Linebackers/senior defensive assistant for the team. While he found a home, it was a larger demotion than many experience.
Most head coaches return to the league as coordinators with another team. However, Brian Flores was demoted to a positional coach. In 2023, however, he found a job as a defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings.
Since then, Brian Flores has worked a full season with the team and appears to have retained the job for 2024, according to Pro Football Reference. Will he ever earn another head coaching job?
