NFL analyst puts Russell Wilson's role as Steelers starting QB on thin ice

Russell Wilson was already expected by many to win the starting job for Week 1. However, with the choice now being confirmed, some fans and analysts are turning the page. That said, at least one NFL analyst believes that Wilson's job security could only last short and he needs to show up in the first two weeks.

Here's how Damien Woody put it on Thursday's edition of "Get Up" when he was asked if halftime of Week 1 was too quick to make a change.

Damien Woody 2:16 "That might be a little bit too spicy, but not far beyond that. ... When you play in AFC North, the toughest division in football, you can't afford to fall behind in those first two games ... so there's not going to be much leash for Russell Wilson."

Of course, two weeks might also be all it takes to define Wilson's career with the Denver Broncos.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback returns to Denver to face Sean Payton in Week 2 in a conclusion of the quarterback's unfortunate time with the team. On one side, Wilson will be aiming to prove that cutting ties with him was a mistake. On the other, Sean Payton will be making a case that he was right all along.

Either way, fans should have their popcorn ready for one of the most anticipated games of September with Wilson now essentially guaranteed to be available in Week 2.

Of course, Wilson's return to Denver won't be the only game fans must have circled on their calendars. On Christmas, fans could see Wilson take on Patrick Mahomes for the third time since the start of the 2023 season.

With both quarterbacks holding a 1-1 record against each other over that span, the Christmas showdown could be a hotly anticipated affair. In their last contest, Wilson defeated Mahomes 24-9.

However, to get to that game, Wilson will need to prove himself worthy of starting for Mike Tomlin for most of the year before that. Some might believe that the quarterback has little chance of getting that far. Steelers fans, however, will hope to see a revived Wilson similar to the one who played for Pete Carroll in Seattle.

If Steelers fans get their way, the franchise not only would be likely assured of Wilson's availability for the Christmas game but into 2025 as well.

Will Russell Wilson stick around deep into the season?
