NFL analyst shocked by General Manager George Paton’s defense of Russell Wilson - “Dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life”

Heading into the end of what has been a nightmarish season for Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos, the team was faced with a decision. After such a struggle, they needed to move on from either the head coach or the quarterback. With the head coach now fired, it is clear the team still believes in their quarterback.

Speaking on First Take, NFL analyst Chris Russo tore into the general manager's defense of the quarterback. He listed several reasons why No. 3 is as big of an issue as anyone in the organization. Here's how he put it:

"Listen, George Paton's lost… He's done an awful job with that football team and to sit there and say ‘this is not the quarterback’ is the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. They've lost eight games by one possession."

Russell Wilson is expected to return in 2023, but will anything change?

He continued, explaining how the year may have torpedoed his candidacy for the Hall of Fame:

"Besides this week, they've had a very good defense, and Wilson's been terrible. There's no spontaneity to his game. He doesn't run anymore. He's 33 years of age and off a bad year last year... I actually think this is going to hurt his Hall of Fame candidacy. Before this year began, we all thought he'd be a Hall of Famer... This is how it ends? He has been atrocious."

Three weeks into the 2022-23 season, the Denver Broncos looked like a team out of sync but held plenty of potential at 2-1. Instead, those first few weeks were as good as it got. Since starting 2-1, the Broncos have fallen to 4-11. Wilson has thrown for 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions, leading an offense that has struggled to put up points.

Aside from putting up 28 points in a losing effort against rival Kansas City Chiefs, Wilson's offense has eclipsed 16 points three times. He is also coming off his worst performance of the season. On Christmas Day, the quarterback threw for one touchdown and three interceptions en route to a 51-14 loss to the Baker Mayfield-led Los Angeles Rams.

Will the Broncos quarterback get to have a victory lap next season or will it be confirmed that his time in the NFL has outstayed its welcome?
