NFL analyst urges Sean Payton’s Broncos to use correct uniforms in revenge battle against Russell Wilson
Once upon a time, it was Russell Wilson's Denver Broncos. Now, it is Sean Payton's Broncos. With the two set to battle early in the 2024 regular season. fans will not have to wait long to see the Broncos step into the same boat the Seahawks were in back in 2022.
Speaking about the matchup on Thursday's "Pro Football Talk," NFL analyst Mike Florio asked that the team don a classic uniform for a classic matchup.
Mike Florio: [00:01:27] "It's a classic matchup... I hope the Broncos, of that umpteen different uniform combinations Nike has given us this year ...hopefully, it'll be the classic Broncos look for that game as the Broncos and Sean Payton welcome Russell Wilson back to town." [00:02:06][38.3] PFT
In what might be one of the most loaded matchups of September across the NFL, Russell Wilson and Mike Tomlin's Steelers will take on the Denver Broncos in their stadium.
Exploring decades of history baked into Week 2 Russell Wilson matchup
As mentioned by Florio, the matchup serves as a classic in several respects. Sean Payton and Mike Tomlin are some of the longest-tenured coaches in the league. The entire game has a mid-2010s feel to it as the two head coaches and half of the starting quarterbacks shared the league a decade ago.
Back then, Sean Payton was regularly lighting up defenses with Drew Brees. Meanwhile, Wilson was doing the same as a member of the Seahawks. Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger were also in the prime of their partnership with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, the combination of stars dates back even further. Payton worked as a head coach as early as 2006, per Pro Football Reference. Tomlin has been around nearly as long, his head coaching career dating back to 2007.
In total, between Payton, Tomlin and Wilson, the game will feature at least three Super Bowl winners. With the added spectacle of the history between Payton and Wilson, it is the frontrunner to be the most anticipated game of the year.
