NFL announces Chiefs among teams for 2023 international games
After a thoroughly successful adventure into international territory in 2022, the NFL announced a fresh set of matchups for the 2023 season.
Five teams will make the trip abroad this year - the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots.
London's Tottenham Hotsout Stadium, a venue that captured the fancy of millions of NFL fans worldwide, will host two international games in 2023 with the Bills and the Titans heading to the city. The Jaguars will also be heading to the United Kingdom, though they will be suiting up at Wembley Stadium as part of an earlier commitment.
The Chiefs and the Patriots will make the trip to Germany to play a couple of regular season games, likely to be held in Munich and Frankfurt.
"It's an honor to be one of the teams representing the NFL abroad in 2023 and play a role in continuing the incredible growth our sport has seen in the UK," Titans President and CEO Burke Nihill said in the press release.
"The atmosphere in London leading up to and at our game in 2018 was absolutely electric. Since then, we've remained in touch with our UK-based Titans fans and they've grown into one of our most enthusiastic fan bases."
NFL international games 2023 signifies league's growing ambition
The commitment to expanding the popularity of the NFL worldwide continues after the league heralded its first-ever regular season matchup in Germany in November last year. A reported 70,000 people purchased tickets for the game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as they faced off at the home of the Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
"It was a success on television, with 5.8 million viewers tuning in on NFL Network, making it the cable channel’s most-watched international game ever," the NFL's press release said.
While there were plans to host an NFL game in Mexico this year, those plans will now have to be postponed, considering the renovations at Estadio Azteca. The league will likely return to Mexico in the near future.
