102-win NFL HC hesitant over 49ers splashing cash on Brock Purdy amid rumors of $325,000,000 deal
The San Francisco 49ers have been beset with injuries all season but one man who has remained consistent for the most part is Brock Purdy. Despite battling through injuries, Purdy has been available for most of the 49ers' games this season and kept the offense afloat despite missing some big names like Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk.
With one Super Bowl appearance under his belt, it appears it's time for the Niners to pay Purdy. Given Dak Prescott's stratospheric deal that made him the NFL's highest-paid player, the going rate for a starting quarterback has gone up significantly. Considering Purdy is next in line, he is set to land a major payday.
However, former NFL head coach Ron Rivera, who racked up 102 wins over the years with the Panthers and the Commanders, isn't of the opinion that the Niners should break the bank for Purdy. On the Dan Patrick Show this week, Rivera said:
“I would be a little bit concerned with it. He’s a solid quarterback. Does some really good things. He is, in my estimation, a game manager. By that I mean he’s a guy who, as long as he protects the football and takes what’s there for him, he’ll be very efficient.
"He does have the ability to make plays when you need him to. That’s one of the things I really like about him.”
ESPN's Bill Barnwell earlier proposed a five-year, $325 million deal. That contract would mean Purdy's salary would significantly increase to $65 million a year. He is currently set to earn $1.1 million in 2025 as part of the final payout of a $3.7 million rookie contract.
Brock Purdy's new deal will come with major decisions for Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch
It's difficult to find a starting quarterback in this league and given Justin Fields is likely to be the biggest name in free agency next year, there aren't too many options for teams looking to land a big name under center.
As such, the Niners will likely have to fork out a long-term deal for Purdy to ensure some stability. That decision, however, could come with implications for the current roster.
The likes of Jevon Hargrave and Deebo Samuel could be among the names let go to make room for Purdy's new deal. Notably, Samuel is in the final year of his contract and has also aired some frustrations over the state of the offense.
