NFL insider claims Jets decision makers could be fired if Aaron Rodgers fails in New York
Aaron Rodgers' move to the New York Jets is expected to happen at some point this offseason. The quarterback's time with the Green Bay Packers is all but over but getting compensation from New York remains a sticking point.
Without question, a move of this magnitude places a great deal of pressure on the Jets' front office. Brian Costello, a beat writer for the Jets, was asked on the show "The Crew" about acquiring the four-time NFL MVP and making it work.
Here's what he said:
"The expectations are going to be raised highly, and on the flip side to that, the possibility for disaster is raised very highly too [...]. They are taking a huge risk. People are going to be fired and so that's the thing."
The last time the New York Jets traded for a Green Bay Packers quarterback, it didn't end up so great for them. Green Bay traded Brett Favre to the Jets in March 2008 for a fourth-round draft pick. The Jets started out the 2008 season with an 8-3 record.
However, the team lost four of its last five games to finish with a 9-7 record and failed to reach the playoffs. It cost then-head coach Eric Mangini his job and Favre went on to join the Minnesota Vikings that offseason.
Aaron Rodgers made it known on "The Pat McAfee" Show earlier this month that he wanted to take his talents to the Big Apple for the 2023 season.
Rodgers said:
"I made it clear that my intention was to play and my intention was to play for the New York Jets. I haven’t been holding anything up at this point it’s been compensation that the Packers are trying to get for me, kind of digging their heels in, I think it's interesting at this point to step back and look at the whole picture.”
For the Super Bowl-winning quarterback, a change of scenery could be in order after his performance last season with the Packers.
A look at Aaron Rodgers vs. Jets QBs statistically in 2022
Last season, the Jets went 7-10 and were last in the AFC East. A major concern was the team's offense, which finished 29th in the NFL in points per game (17.4). Even worse, they had the second-fewest touchdown passes with 15.
Three quarterbacks started multiple games in the 2022 season for the Jets:
The Packers and Aaron Rodgers finished with an 8-9 record, good for third place in the NFC North. Rodgers threw for 3,695 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. In all, he threw for 236 yards less, nearly double the touchdowns, and two fewer interceptions than all three Jets starters last season.
With former teammate Allen Lazard and former Kansas City Chiefs wideout Mecole Hardman signed this offseason, Rodgers could be in line for his 11th 4,000+ yard season. We'll see when the deal becomes official and when Aaron Rodgers lands with the Jets.
