NFL insider delivers rough Derek Carr injury update as Saints stare at bad news
After a left-hand injury during the New Orleans Saints' 14-11 win over the New York Giants, Saints QB Derek Carr’s season hangs in the balance.
To add to the woes, the injury also includes a potential concussion. Therefore, it casts doubt on Carr’s availability for Week 15's game against the Washington Commanders.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport has now weighed in on the NFL QB's injury on "Good Morning Football" on Monday. According to him and his colleague Tom Pelissero, there’s a major fear that Carr’s injury could be a fracture.
"If this is confirmed by tests, he's going to have more evaluations today," said Rapoport. "Generally, with a fracture, you know as soon as it happens that it would likely take the starting quarterback off the field for the rest of the season."
Such a situation would leave the 5-8 New Orleans Saints in a precarious position as they eye a playoff push because the team is already facing uncertainties under interim coach, Darren Rizzi.
Derek Carr's injury took place late in the fourth quarter when he attempted a leap over a New York Giants defender near the first down marker. Next, as he collided midair with his Saints teammate, Kevin Austin Jr., Carr fell on his left arm and slammed into the turf.
Since his helmet struck the ground, Carr was motionless for seconds. Subsequently, medical staff quickly escorted him to the injury tent after which the NFL QB disappeared into the locker room while clutching his left arm.
Derek Carr's first injury of the 2024 NFL season happened nine weeks ago
Earlier, in Week 5, with just 9:38 minutes left in the fourth quarter, an oblique injury against the Kansas City Chiefs sidelined Derek Carr for three games. Jake Haener filled in his shoes over Spencer Rallers. He made a comeback in Week 9 only to get injured again in Week 14.
Talking about the last season, while he didn’t miss a game, he put up with multiple in-game exits for various ailments which included a sprained AC joint and concussion protocol assessments.
This time, if Derek Carr is sidelined, his team will be forced to turn to backup options again.
