NFL insider explains why Bo Nix is the opposite of 49ers bust Trey Lance

NFL insider Ed Werder believes Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is the complete opposite of Trey Lance. Nix was selected 12th overall by Denver in the 2024 NFL draft.

Nix played five years in college and entered the draft as one of the more experienced players. Werder thinks that should allow Nix to become a starter in Week 1, which is the exact opposite of Lance.

"Worth remembering with Broncos rookie Bo Nix impressing in the preseason and potentially starting in Week 1: He started 61 games in his 5-year collegiate career, the most of any player in FBS history," Werder wrote.
"He’s the opposite of Trey Lance. All that experience should accelerate his development and acclimation, especially with Sean Payton being among the best game planners and playcallers," Werder added.

Lance was selected third overall by San Francisco in the 2021 NFL draft out of North Dakota State, as he only played in 19 college games and started 17.

Despite the lack of playing time, the 49ers still selected Lance third overall but he struggled in the NFL and was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, where he is the third-string quarterback.

Bo Nix, Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham are all in contention for the starting quarterback job.

In Denver's second preseason game, Nix went 8-for-9 for 80 yards and a touchdown. Despite Nix looking like a starting quarterback, Broncos head coach Sean Payton says he's still not announcing his team's starting QB.

"Listen, he's played well," Payton said, via NFL.com. "I'm not announcing any starting quarterback tonight. I'll let you guys know when the time comes, but I thought he played well. You feel his comfort level as he continues to get used to the calls coming in. You've got to feel the poise when he's playing.
"I thought he was sharp, obviously, I think he was 8 for 9," Payton said of Nix. "He does a good job of distributing the football, understanding zones, man-to-man, what coverage concepts we're getting."

Nix has thrown for 205 yards and two touchdowns in his two preseason games. Whether or not Nix will play in Denver's final preseason game on Sunday is uncertain.

Denver will open its 2024 season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. The Broncos will then have their home opener in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
